This is one of my favorite books to read. It has been a wonderful book to help me walk through my faith journey as I have been diving deeper into Scripture. Even more so, it has helped me find confidence not only to preach, but to also confidence in doing my due diligence in studying Scripture when preparing a sermon. This has given me tools and new contexts that has deepen my love for the Bible and new understandings that have transformed my faith. While the book focuses more on a general overview approach because of the wealth of information, different topics are covered. This includes the differences between Western and Eastern readers of the Bible, potential mishaps when reading Scripture, and the importance of wrestling and doing due diligence.
Marty walks the reader through different tools to help understand Scripture better from hermeneutics to cultural contexts, and so on. He walks through the different parts of Scripture, giving a general overview of approaching the different pieces and challenges the reader in these moments. This book is written well where anyone of any background can approach it and enjoy it. Marty writes in a way that feels conversational and educational: like you are on a journey with him. Any language that may be deemed technical, he explains thoroughly and overall, the book is a smooth read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who goes up into a pulpit, regardless of background. It is also an excellent read for anyone in ministry because of what it touches on. It will greatly transform your own faith, and even your own preaching.
